"I move through the world so often thinking I have little to offer." Holy cow! The message from your class students (like me in your recent "Grow Your Books" workshop) doesn't seem to be getting through to you. Your work with us is not only improving the books we are writing; your approach and feedback is making us better writers. If it weren't for you, I would have given up on my book long ago. You have helped me believe in it and in myself, even when I had to change direction on it recently. Thank you, Hurley!

LOOK AT YOU! Those curls! Those glasses! That Katie Cotugno book!

But also, look at you directing the flow of your own energies and learning how to circulate them to support not only your own writing, but also the creative work in your community. How glad I am to be part of that community! How excited I am to see what the future holds for you!

Give my deepest affections to the Bold New City of the South.

Thank you for what you wrote here. I've been thinking of you as I've been pondering deleting my Instagram. I only rarely post there, but what makes it hard to delete is it connects me to people from various phases of my life (however, in what ways Instagram connects us all is something I question). Many of those people I'm rarely in physical spaces with these days, or may never physically be in the same space again. I want to have a way of remaining connected, but don't want that connection to be on a platform owned by an oligarch. I use BlockSite and last year switched from my iphone to Light Phone, so I'm mostly able to keep my time on Instagram to about 10 minutes a day. I'm not sure what to do yet, but I'm definitely feeling that this time calls for a deep re-thinking of our relationship to technology.

I was so worried about disconnecting from long-distance friends in leaving the app, but I've already found that my one-on-one connections with those friends have strengthened. I have the capacity for phone calls and texts in a way that I didn't when I was scrolling Instagram every day. Just one woman's experience, of course, but I highly recommend trying it!

I deleted all my Meta accounts last week! It has been such a good shift. I've also made a rule for myself that I cannot check the news on a screen; I can check the news only by reading a printed newspaper or magazine. It has all been part of a process of trying to have technology not take more from my life than it gives. Thank you again for what you shared about how you changed your relationship to social media!

Yesssss Laura, that is huge! I love that rule for yourself with the news, and what a great way to re-center print journalism.

Always appreciate your newsletters and am in full agreement that you’re an innovator trail blazing a new path away from social media platforms that we’ve become seemingly dependent on and susceptible to their biases and advertisers. I’m experiencing that manifesting as ageism. Brava to you and your work!
