READ BOOKS ABOUT WRITING WITH THE BOOK CLUB FOR WRITERS
The inaugural year of the Book Club for Writers blew me away! I couldn’t believe how many of you were game to read and discuss books about the writing life. Here are the titles we’re reading in 2024.
NOVELIST AS A VOCATION BY HARUKI MURAKAMI
After reading a book about novel revision in the book club this year, I thought it would be enlightening to read Haruki Murakami’s book about the experience of having a job as a full-time novelist. Meets Sunday, January 28, 1-2:30 PM EST on Zoom.
YOU COULD MAKE THIS PLACE BEAUTIFUL: A MEMOIR BY MAGGIE SMITH
After one of her poems unexpectedly went viral, Maggie Smith’s life changed drastically. She penned a memoir about those life changes, and I think it’s the perfect fit for our book club: Smith grapples with the question of what a writer is to do with unanticipated fame. Meets Thursday, April 25, 8-9:30 PM EST on Zoom.*
*Note: this date has been changed from Wednesday, April 24.
1000 WORDS: A WRITER’S GUIDE TO STAYING CREATIVE, FOCUSED, AND PRODUCTIVE ALL YEAR ROUND BY JAMI ATTENBERG
Jami Attenberg, founder of the #1000wordsofsummer writing challenge, rounded up writerly wisdom from more than 50 authors (and has a lot to offer herself). This book will be a great one to read over the summer, a time of year when we all seem to hit an inevitable slump in our creative lives! Meets Sunday, July 28, 1-2:30 PM EST on Zoom.
WRITING WILD: FORMING A CREATIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH NATURE BY TINA WELLING
I started keeping a nature journal this year and love being in the practice of writing about what I see, collecting words about the landscape the way one might collect leaves or shells. I hope this book might encourage us all to write more about the worlds around us. Meets Wednesday, October 30, 8-9:30 PM EST on Zoom.

Jami Attenberg, I plan to start her prompt to write 1000 words this summer, she lives in New Orleans, and I went to a talk she presented about the challenge @blue_cypress_books.
I loved the review of the book discussed and can not wait for Kami Attenberg's 1000 words
