***THIS WRITING NIGHT HAS BEEN CANCELED***
Update at 12:45PM EST on November 20: Sincerest apologies to all who planned to attend tonight’s writing night, but I am having to cancel due to a personal conflict.
I hope to reschedule this free writing night before the end of the year. Thank you for understanding! I hope you’ll still get some writing done this evening.
In the wake after wake of disappointing news, we open our notebooks and we write.
The words “government efficiency” chew on our brains all night long, yet we still manage to put a few words on the page the next day.
We wade through this muck with our pens in hand. This action is our miracle.
Here’s a reminder, my love, in case you need it: your writing changes this world. Even if you decide not to share your work, writing it makes you better, and you—thank goodness!!!!—are part of this bittersweet world.
What a gift it is to have you here.
I want to write beside you. I want to hear what you are working on during these polarizing times. Please join me this Wednesday, November 20th at 7:30pm EST for a free co-writing session.
Co-writing sessions have been a game-changer for my writing life. It’s something about the feeling of clocking in: making the appointment with my writing and getting to the desk on time. And it can be an especially sturdy anchor during times like these.
I named this newsletter Lonely Victories because of how unbelievably isolating the writing life can feel. Co-writing groups make the victories, struggles, and everything in-between so much less lonely for me… and I hope they’ll do the same for you.
Let me give you an idea of how Wednesday’s co-writing session will go.
AGENDA FOR WEDNESDAY NIGHT
7:30-7:40PM EST: 10-minute check-in. We share what we’ll be working on during our writing time.
7:40-9:20PM EST: 100 blissful, bountiful minutes of camera-off, self-directed writing time.
9:20-9:30PM EST: 10-minute writing progress report.
FAQs
Do I have to arrive to the session on time? You can drop in or leave anytime. If you arrive late, you’ll miss our check-in at the beginning of the session. If you leave early, you’ll miss our check-in at the end. You’ll be automatically muted when you join.
Do I have to have my camera on? Nope! We’ll do some sharing at the beginning and end of each session, but participation is optional. We will have our cameras and mics off for the rest of class.
Will I fit in if I’m not a “writer?” Absolutely. If you’ve always wanted to write, this is a great place to get started.
Are you going to make me feel guilty if I don't get any writing done? Absolutely not. But I’m here to cheer you on.

All hail the literary it girls. I’m reading Lili Anolik’s brand new biography, Didion & Babitz, and so far, it doesn’t disappoint.
In the audio version, I especially love the inclusion of Emma Roberts reading sections penned by Joan Didion and Eve Babitz themselves.
